I was a Top Writer on the Q&A website Quora for two consecutive years, where I primarily wrote exhaustive deep-dives into the academic literature for public outreach; some of my work appeared in the Huffington Post and Forbes. I currently work as a software engineer, and am working on my first fiction novel about the impact of AI advances on media discourse. As an ex-researcher in the physical sciences, I share the values of the scientific community in the thoughtful pursuit of truth, and believe that storytelling gives fact meaning.

Carissa Cassiel has been writing very honestly about her life on Facebook for several years now. Last year, at the age of 37, when taking an extra curricular class in college, she accidentally fell madly in love with fiction writing and found that the creative talent she'd always lacked even in arts and music, she made up for in writing. She also has creative talent in cooking and photography - but nothing gives her as much joy and discovering a twisted, deeply emotional story as it pours out of her. She lives a deeply authentic, transparent, and highly public life and values honesty very highly. She has a 5 year old son and hopes to have more children soon.

To further comprehension and convey knowledge, both creation of stories themselves and literacy of the trajectories of narratives that have shaped the space where stories develop are crucial; I examine this in my own studies of embodied intelligence and cybernetics, but also directly in everyday life. I feel it is essential to prepare as many minds and hearts as possible to understand and engage the challenges of our moment in history, and believe it starts with enabling comprehension of one’s self amongst the context of personal situations and their affordances, and the broader societal forces at play.

Hi, my name is Madison and I am a community member in Washington, DC! I currently work as a researcher while I pursue my PhD in public policy at George Washington University. I am committed to honesty and storytelling because the words we use to describe our world and the people around us have immense power - shared narratives impact how we are socialized to interact with people who are different from us and can transform the reality of marginalized people, for better or worse.

Aloha! My name is Taletha Derrington, and I’m a Senior Researcher in Educational Statistics at the American Institutes for Research and an outdoor enthusiast. I am committed to social and environmental justice in my professional and personal life. Honesty is a complex phenomenon which most humans value and think we understand until we examine it more closely. Storytelling provides a medium to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our world, and to communicate the perspective that develops from telling a story to others. I am excited that The Honest Storytelling Challenge provides an opportunity and platform to tell a story about honesty.

After a very profound dream I had in 2016 I started writing a sci-fi novel despite a dearth of literary skills. This novel had a principal foe that challenged the existence of all life. That foe embodied the concept of disinformation in its aims of destruction. Realizing that Grammar and I are not ‘the best of friends,’ instead of writing the sci-fi novel, I shifted my efforts into creating Make Truth Matter (Again) a 501c3 non-profit with projects like The Honest Majority as an integral element. Without honesty, civilization can no longer work effectively. With honesty, we are able to create things that were only imaginable in science fiction. With honesty, our stories can become reality.

As a child, it felt like I never could say words anyone, like dad, wanted to hear; it wasn’t like anyone would care enough to listen anyway. I just knew that I didn’t want to risk hurting anyone, since I liked everyone! Most never had a chance to like me back since I so rarely spoke. By the time I reached high school I had mostly forgotten who I was, filled with every story other than my own. This was “safer,” but suffocating.
A teacher encouraged me to write and speak, so upon escaping home, I tried, and graduated with stories of my own as well as an English degree I made good use of by becoming a teacher myself. When I saw my dad again years later, I knew that when I spoke, people would listen―for once, he did. He thanked me for my voice that he had sought to suppress only to realize that a ready truth has far more power than lies or fists
